Why Buying That Cheap TV Is Not Good For Your Home Theater

Posted on

Planning on creating your own home theater and are tempted to buy that really big TV at a price that's too good to be true? If so, know that this may not be the best idea, if quality is what you have in mind. Here are some reasons that you may be disappointed by that budget TV.

Poor Picture Quality

Cheap TVs are going to have poor picture quality, but you may be wondering what that even means. Most cheap TVs skip out by not including local dimming, which means the backlight from the TV is only supplied from the edges. A high end TV will have many small light panels spread out behind the TV, allowing dark parts of the picture to become dark. This can help improve the contrast so that blacks look deeper and darker.

Poor Viewing Angles

The cheap TV may look really good when viewing it straight on, but that is not how everyone in the room views the TV. You may find that the gamma levels are going to shift significantly, as you shift your viewing angle away from the center of the screen. This makes viewing from the side of the room not ideal, resulting in color details that look washed out.

Bad Screen Reflections

If your home theater has windows in it, then you will need to deal with light reflections. A cheap glossy finish to the screen may look great in the showroom, but allow all the light to reflect off the surface in a bright room. High end TVs will have a matte or semi-gloss finishes that help reduce light reflections for a clear picture when watching TV during the day.

Poor Response Time

A budget TV is going to be limited in the response time it has when refreshing the picture. This can make fast motion look blurry, especially when watching sports or anything else that has fast motion in it. You'll notice the problem due to objects having a trail behind them when they move across the television screen. This is not a problem with high end TVs with a higher refresh rate.
